Dakar
The city of Dakar in the nation of Senegal is situated at the most western point of the African continent on the Cape Verde Peninsula along the Atlantic coast. It is Senegal’s capital and largest city with its population counting some 2.45 million people in the metropolis.

The island of Goree off Dakar’s coast was a well known slave depot and from which it is estimated some 20 million slaves left Africa. The island was run by the Dutch, Portuguese, British and French consecutively. Dakar has a long significant history as a colonial capital for the French and as modern capital of Senegal since its independence in 1960.
Dakar houses a significant port which facilitates transatlantic trade both west, to the Americas and north to Europe. It also has a major international airport with many flights into Africa up to Europe as well as to the Americas.

La ville de Dakar dans la nation du Sénégal est le point le plus à l’ouest de l’Afrique sur la côte atlantique. C’est la capitale du Sénégal et la plus grande ville avec une population d’environ 2.45 millions d’habitants. Plus de 90% des habitants sont musulmans.

L’île de Gorée devant la côte de Dakar était un dépôt pour les esclaves et on estime qu’environ 20 millions d’esclaves sont partis de Gorée. L’île a été gouvernée par les Hollandais, les Portugais, les Britanniques et finalement les Français. Dakar a une longue histoire en tant que capitale coloniale pour les Français et comme capitale moderne du Sénégal depuis l’indépendance en 1960.

Dakar possède un port important par qui transite l’échange commercial avec les Amériques et l’Europe. Dakar a aussi un aéroport majeur avec beaucoup de vols vers les autres pays d’Afrique, l’Europe et les Amériques.

Like many African cities it has areas that can be seen as modern but much of the city still lives and functions as a big village. There are many needs and opportunities abound to have an impact for transformation in this context.

Comme beaucoup de villes africaines, il y a des quartiers modernes, mais une bonne partie de la ville fonctionne toujours comme un grand village. Dans ce contexte, il y a beaucoup de besoins et d’occasions d’avoir un impact pour la transformation.
